Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support
Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is a program supported by the Minnesota Department of Education and Greenway Public Schools that is designed to maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. WHAT is PBIS? It is school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. As part of the PBIS program, we will have established several clear rules for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school. We will explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with “green tickets” positive comments, and prizes for their great behavior. The expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout our building (buses too) and playground areas, cafeteria, gymnasium, and classrooms. You will be able to ask your student, “What are the rules in your school?” “How do you follow those rules?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?” Our school rules will specifically address bullying behaviors, provide for a safer school environment and give more time for instruction. We will apply consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all students. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching these students in a positive way, we will provide a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, office staff and our paraprofessionals.
What can I do at home to support PBIS? Post the 3 R’s behavior expectations in a prominent place and celebrate when your student receives green tickets or other prizes for positive behavior. Discuss the behavior expectations frequently and let your child know that you support our school rules. Model and encourage the 3 R’s - Readiness, Respect, and Responsibility at home and when out in the community. If your child comes home with a green “fix it plan” spend time talking about what happened and how he/she could make a more positive behavioral choice next time. Please sign the fix it plan and return to school. We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow. We would like your input and your involvement. Please contact us at school if you have any questions or need further information. Thank you for your support!
